Recommended Reading: Coal

Here's an excellent article from the NYTimes, Is America Ready to Quit Coal. I recommend it. It addresses the problems surrounding continued reliance on coal, such as increasing consequences of global warming and tax increases on carbon outputs. More importantly, it discusses the clean coal issue, and the misleading nature of coal companies' and lobbies' promises to clean things up. For example, one plant is touting the installation of the current clean coal technologies:
"Mr. Morris’s plans, as ambitious as they are, say a lot about just how far away 'clean coal' is. Of the 8.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emitted annually by the Mountaineer plant, only 100,000 to 300,000 will be removed with the new technology." That leaves about 8.2 million metric tons of emissions.
There is nothing new to RTM here, but it is an erudite and clear presentation of the current discussion. It's a good read.
